Negin Farivar (CTO), Receives the Forward Commercialization Fellowship for the SnapCyte™ App

Our CTO, Dr. Negin Farivar, has been awarded the 2023 Dr. Frank Forward and Dr. Gordon Forward Commercialization Fellowship for her development of the innovative SnapCyte™ App and her work to commercialize it.

This is an amazing opportunity that will help me pursue my entrepreneurial goals and bring my idea of democratizing life science research and biotechnology to life. With this scholarship, I will have access to incredible resources to accelerate my business opportunity and make an impact in this industry. Thank you so much to everyone who supported me throughout this process, and to the Frank and Gordon Forward Fellowship committee for believing in me and my vision of making biomedical research available to all scientists globally.

The SnapCyte™ App gives an instant readout of cell culture confluency, making use of your phone camera and a standard brightfield lab microscope. It is:

  • SMART – The SnapCyte™ algorithm is based on artificial intelligence (AI) and accurately measures your cell culture confluency, and gets smarter with every use.
  • INSTANT – Use your phone and the SnapCyte™ Adapter to snap a picture of your cell culture, check the mask, and know your cell culture confluency in seconds.
  • NON-INVASIVE – SnapCyte™ only needs a picture of your cells, so you can get continuous growth data of the same well. Monitor your cell culture for timely downstream processing.

The Dr. Frank Forward and Dr. Gordon Forward commercialization fellowship is awarded to “… Masters and Ph.D. students in the areas of physical sciences, life sciences, engineering or business who are pursuing the commercialization of new technology. Conditional on recipients’ continued satisfactory academic progress and achievement of their milestones for commercialization, the fellowship may be renewed for an additional year of study. The fellowships are made on the recommendation of the Faculty of Applied Science in conjunction with representatives from entrepreneurship@UBC and HATCH, in consultation with the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.“ (from the UBC – University of British Columbia – website).

Congratulations, Negin!
